The idea for the Four Hour Day was conceived around 2010 by Gabe Sinclair, as a spot for the hands-on practice of creative arts. The guiding thought was that music should be a thing we all do, rather than simply witness, and that we should break down the barriers between audience and performer.
The shop is named for a utopian novel that Gabe wrote, detailing a future where we work cooperatively & collectively and everyone need only work four hours a day. The book is available as a free PDF, and if you read and enjoy it, do stop in to talk about it!
The current home of the Four Hour Day is our space at 4305 Harford Rd. Gabe and his son Tyler spent eighteen months rehabbing the building, which had lain derelict for at least a decade. While we had a lot of fun falling through the roof, getting covered in plaster dust and endlessly spackling, we’re glad that part’s over and we get to enjoy the shop, studio and home now.
At our space, we offer private lessons in piano and guitar/mandolin/ukulele/others, group lessons in harmony singing, composition and guitar, concerts, instrument-building workshops, community music events, and much more. We also have a wonderful dog. Come visit us!
